In yet another chilling episode in the feudal society of rural Bihar, the hands of a 20-year-old youth from Arwal district were chopped off because he failed to repay a loan of Rs 300. Ram Sagar Chandravanshi, who belongs to an extreme backward caste, is currently admitted in the Patna Medical College. "They wanted to punish me in such a way so that I lose my hands, my only means to earn my livelihood, as I had refused to accept their diktat," he said.

A Special Central Bureau of Investigation court in Patna on Thursday framed charges against Bihar's former chief ministers Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra, along with 32 other accused, in the multi-crore fodder scam case. According to court officials, the CBI court framed charges against Lalu, Mishra and others including former Member of Legislative Assembly R K Rana and Janata Dal United Member of Parliament Jagdish Sharma.

The Bihar government has decided to develop the road connecting Bodh Gaya to Patna into a four-lane express highway with funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, officials said on Saturday. "The proposed project of widening of the 110-km stretch between Bodh Gaya to Patna and developing it as a four lane express highway is ready and work will begin soon," said an official in the Chief Minister's Office. At present, the road only has two lanes.
